There is a mythological Salamander. In Medieval occultism (specifically that from Paracelsus, a 16th Century alchemist and occultist), the Salamander is the elemental of [[Fire]]. They are depicted as [[lizards]] which resemble the real salamanders, but which reside in fires. The Salamander was not invented by Paracelsus. It appeared in heraldry, usually sitting in a fire. The other elementals were: Undine ([[Water]]), Gnome ([[Earth]]), [[Sylph]] ([[Wind|Air]]).
