Historical Background

Alkyoneus was one of the Gigantes (giants) in Greek mythology. He was the king of the Gigantes of Thrace. He was invulnerable while inside the borders of his homeland, Pallene (located in the land of Thrace). He was considered the leader of the Gigantes in the Gigantomachy (war between the Olympians and the Gigantes). Alkyoneus was defeated by Hercules in the Gigantomachy, who slew the giant outside the borders of his land. Alkyoneus' name pertains to the kingfisher (alkyon).
