Historical Background

Antares, also called Alpha Scorpii, is the brighest star in the constellation Scorpius and one of the brightest stars in the sky. Antares was used in some Ancient Egyptian rituals and the Persians considered it one of the "royal stars" (the others are Aldebaran, Regulus, Fomalhaut). Antares is Greek for "opposed to Ares" (Ares is the god of war and the Greek name for the planet Mars), which derives from its red color, which makes it somewhat similar to Mars. Antares is a M-type star (red) and is a red giant. It is located 604 ly from the Sol solar system. Antares is also called The Heart of the Scorpion.
