Historical Background

In Roman society, the Veles (plural Velites) were a class of light infantry in the army of the Roman Republic. These skirmishers were armed with a short sword (gladius) or dagger and several small javelins known as verutum. At the point in the Republic during in which they were used, soldiers generally paid for their own equipment. Since each veles tended to be from the poorer brackets of Roman citizenry, they only could have been able to afford light armor.
