Historical Background[]

In Ainu folklore, the Akkorokamui (or Atkorkamuy) is a giant octopus-like monster with a large 110m long red body like the color of the setting sun reflecting off the water which lurks in Uchiura Bay off southern Hokkaido's Oshima Peninsula in Japan. It is said that its enormous red body can be seen from a great distance. Because of its great size, it posed potential peril to fishing boats going back centuries, leading to stories of fishermen carrying scythes onboard to defend their boats from the Akkorokamui. Kamuy (or kamui) is the term for a divine being in Ainu folklore.
