Historical Background

Attar of rose is rose otto; that is, rose oil extracted via steam distillation. It is one of the most used oils in perfumery. In folklore medicine, it was used as a blood purifier, liver cleanser, and as a digestive tonic. It is also often employed as a skin care product. Also in mysticism Rose Otto was used in love potions to attract a lover.
