Historical Background

Balan and Balin were brothers in Arthurian legend. Balin has a greater volume of stories about him, but Balan comes into Balin's story when Balan has killed the defender of a castle and is forced by the knight's code to become the defender of that castle. Balin is eventually obliged to fight that defender. Balan and Balin fight each other, not recognizing who one another is because Balan is wearing uncharacteristic red armor and Balin is wielding an uncharacteristic shield. Balan and Balin both end up mortally wounding one another. Balin and Balan was also the name of a poem written by Alfred Lloyd Tennyson in 1885.
