Historical Background

In medieval folklore, the Barometz refers to a "lamb plant", more commonly called the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary, or simply the Vegetable Lamb. Its full name was 'Planta Tartarica Barometz'. It possibly is a factually twisted account of Polypodium barometz, an Asian fern which has thick roots growing along the soil surface which are covered in a thick woolly fur, which when cut, release a red fluid. It was the postulated origin of cotton, a wool-like fiber which comes from a plant. Medieval Europeans did not know where it was from. Its myth dates back to the 11th century. It is sometimes spelled Borometz and Borametz and Jeduah is an alternate name. Barometz is the Tartar word for "lamb".
