Historical Background

In Mayan mythology, Camazotz was a bat-god or bat-monster. Camazotz was a bat-god who would descend to the earth when corn was planted. He lived in the cave Zotzilaha and terrified the local farmers. The Popol Vuh uses the word Camazotz to refer to bat-like monsters encountered in Xibalba, the capital of the Mayan underworld. They attacked the Maya Hero Twins Hunahpu & Xbalanque when they ventured to Xibalba.

Camazotz is also a name used for a cryptozoological creature (e.g. bigfoot, loch ness monster, etc), which is also called the snatch bat or death bat. It was supposedly a giant bat which attacked humans or other large animals. Fossils from the giant vampire bat, Desmodus draculae, have been found in Mesoamerica, which may explain the origin of the myth. Zotz means "bat" in Mayan.
