Ladybugs
These large, beetlelike insects were once found in forested areas throughout Quon. Unveiling their encased wings for flight caused the ladybug's brilliant red shell to splay, displaying two dorsal, jet-black circles. These resembled a pair of oversized eyes, and were intended as a warning to potential predators. Though the exact cause of their extinction remains undetermined to this day, it is generally accepted that no ladybugs have existed in Vana'diel since the end of the Crystal War.
During the daytime these insects experience a variety of unidentifiable status boosts. At night, their aggressive nature is replaced with a more passive temperament. |

Historical Background
The insect known as the ladybug in North America, ladybird in all other English-speaking countries (e.g. Britain, Australia), or lady beetle is a type of beetle belonging to family Coccinellidae. They are generally black in appearance with some white spots and had red, orange, or yellow wing covers (elytra), often with black markings on it. Color and markings vary by species. The ladybug feeds on aphids and shieldbugs and is thus considered beneficial for gardens and agriculture, though have been known to be herbivores when prey aren’t available. Some species are also known to migrate en masse or hibernate during winter. The most familiar ladybugs, deep red elytra with black spots, belong to genus Coccinella, which is found in North America, Europe, and Asia.
There is a lot of superstition centering around the ladybug in Europe, usually beneficial. Among the most common beliefs are if a ladybug lands on a person, their wish will be granted, if a ladybug flies into a person’s bedroom, the person will have good luck, and if a ladybug lands on a woman’s hand, that woman will be married within the year.
