Sandworms
For years the sandworm has held a place in Galkan folklore; the enormous worms were said to lurk in the deserts of the underworld, scavenging upon the interred bodies of the dead. Thought for a long time to be nothing more than a fictitious beast, their existence came as a shock during the Great War when they were observed, on numerous occasions, burrowing up on the field of battle to swallow unsuspecting soldiers.
The sandworm has been spotted in a number of zones, but thus far has not yielded any notable drops on its own. It can, however, teleport whole parties into burning circle fights, which can drop amazing pieces of armor. |

Historical Background
Sandworms originate from modern fantasy literature, first appearing in Dune by Frank Herbert (1965) on the desert world of Arrakis. They were depicted as gigantic, eyeless worms with a mouth filled with sharp teeth. They were weak against water, which was poison to them. They produce the spice which is viciously fought over in the Dune franchise.
Since then, Sandworms have appeared in some movies during the 1980s, like Beetlejuice (1988) as giant black & white striped worms which roam a desert dimension which ghosts can visit and Tremors (1990) as smaller, but still large, sand-colored worms called Graboids that have teeth and prey on anything living that moves in the Nevada desert.
The release of the film Dune in 1984 would appear to be the inspiration for the appearances made by Sandworms in films and in Final Fantasy (1987) in the late ‘80s.
