Cavernous Maw
From FFXIclopedia, the free Final Fantasy XI encyclopedia
What lies beyond these mysterious portals of grotesque design, and why have they suddely manifested across Vana'diel? Perhaps the answer lies in rumors which state similar gates were also witnessed during the Crystal War, two decades past.
- Mysterious portals known as "cavernous maws" have appeared in various locations around present-day Vana'diel. These portals can be used as gateways between the present and the past (Shadowreign Realm). There is no cost to use the maws.
- In order to use a present-day Cavernous Maw, you must use the same one in the past, similar to gaining access to Runic Portals.
Locations
- Batallia Downs (S) (H-5)
- Rolanberry Fields (S) (H-6) (Located on the border of H-6 & G-6)
- Sauromugue Champaign (S) (K-9 do not fall off cliff)
- Note: You must pass through Garlaige Citadel to access this Maw. Do NOT go back in the present and leave the cliff if this is the Maw you exit in the first CS of Mission 1. Unlock another Maw in the past such as Rolanberry Fields (S) first. Otherwise, you'll need to either proceed through each of the gates in Garlaige (or get tractored up the cliff) in the present to go back into the past again.
- Note: In the past this can be soloed. No mobs, no gate breach. Just take the northern-most path through Garlaige Citadel from West to East (Map 1 to 2).Maw is located in SW corner of K-9.
- Jugner Forest (S) (H-11)
- Pashhow Marshlands (S) (K-8)
- Meriphataud Mountains (S) (K-6)
- East Ronfaure (S) (H-5)
- North Gustaberg (S) (K-7)
- West Sarutabaruta (S) (H-9)
Using Cavernous Maws
- Upon checking a maw for the first time in Batallia Downs, Sauromugue Champaign, or Rolanberry Fields, you will trigger the first mission cutscene. You will obtain a Pure White Feather key item, which is your "pass" through the maws.
- A portion of the first mission cutscene may depend on which maw was used to enter the past.
- You can "unlock" other maws in different present-time areas by using them in the corresponding past-time area.
- When you first enter a maw, you will be transported to a maw in Batallia Downs (S), Sauromugue Champaign (S), or Rolanberry Fields (S). It is possible to use a maw in one zone and arrive in another. When you zone into the past, the only maw you will be able to use from the current timeline will be the one from which you exited in the past. For example: if you used the maw in Rolanberry Fields and ended up in Sauromugue Champaign (S), you will only be allowed to access the Sauromugue Champaign maw until you unlock other maws. Simply put, once you enter the past the first time, you can only re-enter the past via a Maw which you have used in the past.
Notes
- Gobbiebag expander Bluffnix will sometimes say that the Maws remind him of a song his grandgobbie used to sing to him about the "Mawed One."
- Make sure, when looking for the maws, that you pickup either the Blue Recommendation Letter-Bastok, Red Recommendation Letter-San d'Oria, or Green Recommendation Letter-Windurst. This will save you a lot of time later. These letters are for pledging your allegiance to the nation of your choice for campaign battles.
