Historical Background
In Native American mythology of the Mapuche (or by some accounts, the Auca) of Chile, Colo-Colo is a creature which killed humans by sucking their spit and injecting sickness and disease in place of it. Another name for it was Basilisco, which indicates the alternate name might be an import of the European Basilisk (see Basilic) or the whole concept of the creature may be an import. It is said to be born from a bird's egg, though that may be an import of part of the Basilisk's story. Colocolo is also the name of a small opossum living in the cloud forests of the Andes Mountains in Chile and Argentina also called Monito del Monte ("mountain monkey"), which is thought to bring bad luck. Colo-Colo is also the name of the most popular football (soccer) team in Chile, though they are named for a famed Mapuche tribal chief, Colo-Colo, who fought against Spanish invaders in the 1500s.
