Historical Background

A frac is the French term for a frock coat. A frac is a man's coat characterized by knee-length skirts all around the base, popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Most fracs were fitted, long-sleeved, with a center vent at the back and were likely of a military origin.

A commodore is a naval rank used historically and presently by several navies. The rank of Commodore derives from the French commandeur, which was one of the highest ranks in orders of knighthood, and in military orders the title of the knight in charge of a commenda (a local part of the order's territorial possessions).
