Historical Background

Cronos was the leader of the Titans in Greek mythology. The Titans were the generation of gods who ruled before the Olympian gods ruled. Cronos, offspring of Gaia & Ouranos, overthrew Ouranos and ruled during the mythological Golden Age. He was considered the god of harvest and agriculture. His weapon was a sickle. Cronos was overthrown and imprisoned with the rest of the Titans in Tartarus (a pit in the Underworld) when the Olympians, the children of Cronos defeated him and his brethren in the Titanomachy (war between the Olympians and the Titans). He is also identified with the Roman deity, Saturn.
