Historical Background
Denali is a word that often appears around Alaska, most notably as the Native Americans’ name for Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain on North America. It lends its name to the national park in which Mount McKinley is located, Denali National Park. Denali is Athabaskan for “the great one”.
Note: The name of the mountain is in debate, with some sources naming it Denali and others Mount McKinley. The protests stem from the mountain being formally named Mount McKinley in 1897 after then-US President William McKinley, who was most well known for establishing America as an empire. Native Americans view the naming as disrespectful and a vestige of colonialism. The state of Alaska gives the formal name of the mountain as Denali while the US government gives the formal name of the mountain as Mount McKinley.
In more recent years, Denali was a name for a luxury model SUV produced by GMC from 1998 to the present.
