Historic Background

A dōtanuki is a thick, long handled sword resembling a katana. The dōtanuki was made to slice through a target with just a single cut and was boasted as the only sword capable of slicing in half a samurai wearing full armour.

The Dotanuki was the name of a Shinto period smithing school in the Higo Province.

It was most popular during the Azuchi-Momoyama (1568-1600) period.
