Historical Background

Each of the Item-slot items dropped by the Avatars which are used in the Mama Mia quest were a Key Item from one of the first seven Final Fantasy games. Egil's Torch was a key item in Final Fantasy II, which was used to harness the Sunfire, which was needed to destroy the Paramecian Empire's Dreadnought (a giant, heavily armed airship). The Sunfire is a constantly burning flame that came from a star fragment that crashed on the site Kashuan Keep was built upon.
