Historical Background

In Siberian mythology, Erlik was an evil spirit who was the first creation of the creator god of the Siberian peoples, but his pride caused him to be banished to the underworld. In Lapp mythology (the Lapps reside in the Laplands in northern Scandinavia), Erlik was the lord of the underworld, who was depicted as a monstrous entity who guarded deceased souls. In Altai mythology (the Altai reside in the center south part of Russia, near Kazakhstan and Mongolia), he was the teacher of sin and was represented sometimes as a bear.
