Historical Background

Foxfire refers to the bioluminescence created by certain types of fungus under right conditions, such as decaying wood at night. Most of the fungi that produce foxfire are from the genus Armillaria (the honey fungus). It emits a greenish glow from a decaying tree or log. As such, the phenomenon struck fear into superstitious people in pre-Modern times.
