Historical Background

In African religion, specifically the Yoruba, Iya Moopo is a supreme goddess. She is described as a potter that molds existence who is considered protector of women’s crafts (e.g. weaving, dyeing). She is considered a trinity, with Iyemowo (feminine aspect of Obatala, the creator of humans), Iya Loode (mother of the cosmic order, specializes in abiku, children predestined to die before reaching age 12), and Nana Buukun (a primal feminine energy that has existed since the beginning of creation) as aspects.
