Historical Background

According to the mythology of ancient mesopotamia, Kumbaba, also known as Humbaba or Kubaba, is the guardian of of the forests of the Gods as well as holding reign as the deity of nature as described in the Epic of Gilgamesh. According to one account, Kumbaba lost its role as deity and became a demon and enemy of Gilgamesh. In another account Gilgamesh sets out with his friend Enkidu to slay Kumbaba. When Kumbaba was incapacitated Enkidu urged Gilgamesh to not be merciful and dispatch the deity. In the epic, Kumbaba is reported to be a dragon.
