Historical Background

In Hindu belief, the makara is a sea monster that is a crocodile with an elephant's trunk, in addition to a crocodile's snout. It is the mount (steed) of Varuna. In Vedic Astrology, Makara is the Hindu name for the zodiac sign Capricorn.
