Historical Background

Mauthe Doog is the Black Dog of Death on the Isle of Man. It dwelled inside a castle (Peel Castle) and skulked through the corridors at night. Black Dogs were considered a death portent in the British Isles. Other Black Dogs of Death included Barghest, Gwyllgi ("dog of darkness" in Wales), Gallytrot, Old Shuck/Black Shuck, Guytrash, Padfoot, Yeth, and the Cwn Annwn, who were more commonly depicted as white, but still associated with death. Mauthe Doog is not Manx and where the term came from is unclear, as the Manx term for "black dog" is Moddey Dhoo. Nonetheless, Mauthe Doog does appear in folklore texts.
