Historical Background
Moloch (occasionally spelled Molech) was the chief god of the Canaanite pantheon, the god of the Sun. Moloch was the Hebrew translation name of this god and not the name his worshippers used, which was Baal. Moloch was depicted as being a bull-headed human and was said to have been born in the form of an ox or calf. The Canaanites sacrificed children to Moloch by being thrown into a fire inside a giant hollow bronze statue of Moloch. These sacrifices were considered necessary to renew the strength of the sun's fire (similar to the Aztec ritual). They took place at Tophet, a location whose name has become synonomous with Hell and with dumping grounds. In Medieval demonology, Moloch is the Prince of Hell, depicted as a cow-headed man with a crown sitting on a throne. Given the ox or cow-like depiction, it makes sense for them to be depicted as a Taurus.
