Historical Background

In Northern German folklore, the Nachtzehrer was an undead monster. It would be a recently deceased person killed in an unusual manner (usually by accident or suicide or being the first to die from an epidemic) who resurrected to attack its former family and villagers. They would devour humans. Nacthzehrer is popularly translated from German as "night-waster", but "night-gnawer" is more appropriate (since zehren means "to feed on" in the manner an animal would feed on something). Its equivalent in Southern Germany was the Blutsauger (German "blood-sucker"). Nachzehrer, which means "after-waster" ("after-gnawer") is an alternate spelling.
