Historical Background

Odin was referred to by more than 200 names which hint at his various roles. One of his names, according to the Poetic Edda and the Grímnismál, was Ofnir meaning bewildere. Ofnir was also a serpent that gnaws on Yggdrasil's (the world tree) twigs.
