Historical Background
Okeanos was one of the Titans in Greek mythology. Greeks and Romans regarded Okeanos as a river circling the world at the farthest horizons. He was often depicted as having the upper body of a bearded and horned man and the lower body of a serpent. While Poseidon was associated with the Mediterranean Sea, Okeanos was associated with the Atlantic Ocean (which is what the Greeks considered to be that oceanic stream flowing around the world). During the Titanomachy (war between the Olympians and the Titans), Okeanos remained neutral and did not participate in the conflict.
