Historical Background

The Ouryu in FFXI seems to be based on the Chinese Yìnglóng, 應龍 (lit. "responding dragon", and pronounced as Ouryuu in Japanese), not the Chinese Huánglóng, 黃龍 (lit. "yellow dragon"), which the Japanese Ouryuu/Kouryuu (黄龍 - different character encoding? Source) is based on, and not a "King Dragon", as many have come to believe.

The written representation of Ouryu's name, "應龍", can be seen at eLeMeN (JP site) in the name of the battle Ouryu Cometh, and is a logogram—a written symbol representing something, but which may have different pronunciations in different languages. So as stated earlier, in Japanese, it would be pronounced as "Ouryuu", but in Chinese, it would be pronounced as "Yìnglóng".

In Chinese mythology, Yìnglóng is a winged dragon associated with rains and floods, and was believed to be a servant of Huángdì, the Yellow Emperor. In a battle against Chīyoú, Huángdì and his army were stranded, and it seemed that they were sure to lose. But then Yìnglóng arrived, and Huángdì rejoiced, exclaiming, "啊!應龍來了。" Source, which may be loosely translated as, "Ah! Yìnglóng has come." While this phrase may not necessarily be where "應龍来来" ("Ouryu Cometh") comes from, it does imply doom for any mortals opposing Yìnglóng/Ouryu.
