Historical Background

In Greek mythology, Pluto is an alternate name for the god of the dead and the Underworld, Hades. Pluto originated as a separate entity from Hades, but was eventually merged into Hades. Pluto was the god of chthonic resources, which included all the minerals and ores, including precious metals and precious gems. Pluto was the god of the physical underworld, while Hades was the god of the spiritual underworld. The Romans adopted Pluto into their mythology, replacing the indigenous deity of the underworld, Orcus. Pluto's name derives from the Greek word for "wealth".

The 9th planet of the solar system was named Pluto, before its planetary status was officially removed on August 24th, 2006. It was discovered on February 18, 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. The planet was named after the Roman god (not the Disney dog Pluto) and the name was also chosen because the first two letters of the word are PL, which are also the initials of Percival Lowell, a very famous late 19th-early 20th century astronomer who was searching the night sky for Planet X from the same observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona where Pluto had been discovered from. Pluto has a diameter of 2306km (making it about 2/3 the size of Earth's Moon). The removal of it's planetary status is still being hotly debated.
