Translation

Raikiri is Japanese for "Cutting Thunder" (雷切).　The name comes from an actual katana used by a famous samurai Tachibana Dousetsu(立花道雪). When one day Tachibana was resting in the shades of a tree from raining, a bolt of thunder almost struck him but he was able to draw his katana and cut through it. Originally named Chidori(千鳥, meaning thousand bird), the katana was renamed to Raikiri(雷切) after that. Like the legend, the NM "Dosetsu Tree" only appears during thunder storm and looks like a tree. Also, the name Dosetsu is most likely from the original owner of this sword Dousetsu.
