Historical Background
In Medieval European folklore, a revenant was a reanimated corpse which emerged from its grave to haunt the living. Revenants were also believed to spread disease among the living. They were believed to be people who committed crimes or were unbelievers. Revenant is a French word which means "returning" and refers to the entity returning from the dead. Final Fantasy XI's use of Revenant as a Ghost is inaccurate. A Skeleton or Zombie would be more appropriate. Previous games in the series depicted them as a zombie.
