Historical Background
A Saraband (Sarabande) is a type of dance in triple meter wherein the second and third beats of each measure are tied giving a rhythm similar to a minuet. The first historical reference came in 1539, in which a dance called a 'zarabanda' was mentioned in a poem by Fernando Guzmán Mexía. Taken back to Europe by Conquistadors and merchants, the Sarabande was strictly suppressed in Spain in 1583 due to its obscenity but it continued to remain popular in spite of the official church censor. By the early 17th century the Sarabande had spread to courts of Italy and France, where it was performed as a slow, serious processional dance in the 3/2 metre. An example of a Sarabande is J.S. Bach's Partita for Clavier No. 1.
