Historical Background
In Greek mythology, Selene was the goddess of the Moon, who fell in love with a hunter named Apollonius of Rhodes. Apollonius was a mortal, and he was granted one wish by Zeus after he married Selene; he asked for eternal sleep so that he could remain with Selene forever. Selene in turn, would slip from the sky every night to meet him. She had fifty daughters, each of whom was comprised of the moon phases. The one she bore with Zeus was named Pandia and was said to be the "utterly shining" full moon. Hence, it is not a surprise that this bow is called the "Selene's Bow".

Appolonius of Rhodes was a greek poet/scholar of the 3rd century BCE and was also the director of the Library of Alexandria. Appolonius was best known for his epic poem "The Argonautica." Source
