Historical Background

The Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii) is a species of pine native to the Southeastern US. Its range extends from South Carolina to Louisiana and down to the Florida Keys. It gets the slash portion of its name from the terrain it grows in: slashes (swampy land filled with trees and bushes). It can reach a height of 60-100 feet (18-30m). It produces reddish-brown pine cones.
