Historical Background

In British folklore (specifically Cornish), Spriggans were spirit-like beings that are described in several different ways. By some accounts, they are the ghosts of giants who can inflate or shrink their size. They are actually said to be small, ugly beings who are often mistaken to be ghosts of giants because of their ability to change their size. These Spriggans caused all sorts of small disasters, like collapsing structures, lost children, crop damage, or bad weather. They were considered dangerous, often robbing humans and kidnapping infants and leaving a repugnant baby Spriggan in its place (the Changeling archetype). They were also said to be found around standing stones or other megaliths guarding treasures. The other account of Spriggans says they resemble cats from a distance, having furry bodies, bright eyes, and long tails. These cat creatures could also change size and travel across large distances in a single moment.
