Historical Background

In Roman mythology, the Strix (also spelled Striga. Plural: Striges), was a vampiric bird. This bird (owl) fed on human blood and human flesh. Striges were once humans. They were cannibals who were transformed into vampiric owls as punishment. Striges were viewed as harbingers of ill omen, such as war and strife. Strix is a loan word from Greek and means "owl". Stirge is a corruption of the spelling which occurred in recent times.
