  • Here is a very good and informative guide to Bigmouth Billy by Lionheartviii (original post [here]:

Well, it appears people are reacting kindly to my post on Jaggedy-Eared Jack, and as agreed, I guess I can release my research on these NMs I know extensively about. So... Bigmouth Billy... where to begin?

Ive killed him too many times to tell, and I never really bothered counting, since he's not really an important NM. Im probably one of very few people who actually took the time to hunt this NM (for the sake of sport, yet again). I'd wager that for a month or so, this was the only NM I was focussing on (I always hunted Billy during the day, and ran to hunt Spook at night, then come back out for Billy in the morning) Once again, Ill set this post into the Fact, Rumor (not yet proven), and Fiction categories, and you all can enjoy it from there. So here we go...

Fact:

  • 1) Spawn area: Bigmouth Billy does, indeed, spawn in places slightly outside the area circled above. And, as mentioned many times in this thread, it is true that Billy does rarely spawn on the west side of the Cheval River--but he does nonetheless--so if you're hunting him, dont neglect to look over there once in a while. If you want an easy guide to find Billy, follow this: go to the bridge that crosses the river (in the middle of Billy's spawn area). From there, walk north along the edge of the river tabbing through targets until you reach a spot where the road branches off. Follow that road east and keep going until you hit the mountain. Go south along the mountain until you hit a big downhill slope. Then, follow along that slope back to the river and go north again. Rinse, lather repeat. :P I'd say after 2-3 rounds, take a quick look on the other side of the river just to make sure your not missing him. I highly doubt he'll be hunted, so chances are, if ya hunt Billy, youll be the first to find him. Note: make sure ya check between the stone wall and the mountain on the east side as well... Billy likes it back there.
  • 2) Billy's respawn: Ive heard a lot of people say that theyve seen Billy, then when they get to him, he goes into the ground, and doesnt come back up. Well, I'll assure you, he does NOT despawn. Just like any other worm, Billy goes into the ground, and comes back out again later. The only difference is he can travel VERY FAR when he goes back into the ground. Ive once waited for him to go underground, then I did a wide scan for him a couple seconds later: Billy had come back up in an area that wouldve taken at least 30 seconds for me to walk to. So, if he goes under, just run around in a panic til ya find him. Rofl, hes out there somewhere.
  • 3) Stealing Gold Ores: Some people have been doubtful of whether you can steal gold ores from Billy. It is true--you can steal Gold Ores from him, if youre patient enough :P I have stolen quite a few gold ores from Billy, but it always took me a while (perhaps having items that give Steal+ abilities wouldve helped). On another note, its been debated whether or not you can steal more than 1 gold ore from Billy. I have tested it, and my results came up inconclusive. In otherwords, Ive once held Billy for 2 hours, with 3 other THF friends with me, and we all try to steal from Billy. The most Ive ever gotten from him in one fight was 1 gold ore... then I get bored and kill him =/ I believe its quite possible to steal more from him (mostly because other people here say they have--although that doesnt mean theyre not lying). If you have the time, try it out for yourself :P
  • 4) Drop rates: As you probably expect, Bigmouth Billy drops fairly easily--especially with the Iron Ores and Mythril Ores, but not so much with the Colored Rocks. Having THF definitely helps with the drop rates though. Ive seen Billy drop up to 4 items in one kill.

Rumors-- These are things which I believe could be true, but I have yet to prove.\ Ummm.... <_< >_> Now that Im thinking of it, there arent many controversial facts that have been brought up about Billy. Probably because hes not a very important NM. But here's one thing I could come up with:

  • 1) Spawn time: Bigmouth Billy is also one of my "spawn trend" monsters. In otherwords, he seems to have a fairly consistent spawn time (never EXACT, but not terribly sporadic either) and at the same time, killing other Carrion Worms SEEMS to make him spawn faster, but theres obviously no proof that it actually DOES make him spawn faster. From what Ive seen, Billy spawns quite often. The lowest time its taken between encounters for me was 28 minutes (This value was obtained from my /playtime. I killed him, went to San d'Oria to sell stuff off, came back out, and there he was again), so its possibly that he could have spawned even earlier. On the other hand, Ive hunted for roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes before seeing the next spawn. It should be noted that everytime I hunted this NM, I killed Carrion worms as I came across them, using the same method I described above. Be advised, if you are going to do this too, make room in your inventory, or bring Fire Crystals. Your inventory will fill up with Copper Ores, Zinc Ores, Silver Ores, and Flint Stones VERY quickly... a lot of trash, but profitable if you take the time to synth it all. Anywho, my personal best is well over 10 Billy kills in one day.

Fiction--

  • 1) Day/Drop Comparison: People earlier along this thread have said that Billy drops Colored Rocks based on what day you kill him (i.e. if you kill him on Firesday, you get a Red Rock). This information is incorrect. I have gotten nearly every kind of colored rock on every day, regardless. Personally, I believe that it just randomly determines what color rock he will drop when you kill him. However, this doesnt mean that the day doesnt slightly influence the color rock that he drops. I really havent compiled data for it, but I suppose it is possibly that Red Rock has a higher probability of dropping on Firesday than other rocks. Maybe I should look into that--I'll write back with that data. o0o0o0o Im intrigued now :P

So, in conclusion, theres my little rant about Bigmouth Billy. A big post about a not-so-big monster <_> Not so much fun to hunt, not very exciting to claim, and an easy NM to knock of your list if youre looking to kill them all. This is probably a great thing to hunt if youre around lvl 9-10 though. I imagine you get good EXP from the monsters around there, and when he pops, maybe youll get 100 EXP and a nice little souvenir as well :P

Rate up if you guys wanna keep hearing more! I love sharing what I know :P Have fun guys!

Be safe and happy hunting! --Lion
