Talk:Cannonball (Blue Magic)

From FFXIclopedia, the free Final Fantasy XI encyclopedia

Defense is a modifier? I read somewhere that DEF is this spell's ATK. Not too sure, though. *Noob BLU*. --Jopasopa 13:08, 6 January 2007 (EST)

I am not sure defense modifies the damage. According to http://www.neko-sentai.com/images/BlumageNFO.htm the modifiers are STR 50% & VIT 50% --Dezo 19:46, 12 January 2007 (EST)

It has also been my general understanding that DEF functions more like Attack power for this spell, rather than a true modifier (meaning that more defense means more consistancy, rather than higher max damage). It could be tested by changing defense while maintaining constant STR and VIT, on level 1 enemies. I'd test it myself by I do not currently have access to FFXI (crappy college internets ftl)--KyteStrike 14:49, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Okay, I found some data on BG that suggests that defense is, in fact, a modifier, as it increased damage on lvl 1 enemies. --KyteStrike 15:40, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

a few months late but yes defense is also calculated so any special builds of defense in places you cannot sport extra VIT and STR will improve your mileage--K.Ishitar 01:17, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Just as a note, word on the street is defense caps at 700 on this spell. This is easily achieved with a decent Cannonball build, Cocoon, Protect IV, and Tavnazian Tacos. I've heard contrasting information claiming the def cap is based on the mob's level, so 700 may not be the cap on tougher mobs. --Samoj 05:06, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

I was looking some info on Seank Attacking Cannonball. At on point I was told that even if I used a Fire Staff when I SA Cannonball it will still hit. Is this true or should I just stay with my Ifrit's Blade? ~Weav~

While it is true that physical blue magic's accuracy is based on the skill level of the weapon you are holding, Sneak Attack is an auto-hit, so a Vulcan's Staff works well in certain situations. This works best on kited mobs, like Kirin and Proto-Omega (on two legs). If you are able to melee, Wing Sword and Acheron Shield is still your best bet. Note that any physical spells cast with a staff equipped and without Sneak Attack will miss horribly, and this makes baby Altana cry. --Samoj 11:04, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Editted out this piece: Has anyone else noticed that with Cocoon active before Chain Affinity, possibly just the spell that when you make a Light Skillchain out of this and Savage Blade, the skillchain and the spell do the exact same damage? I'd like to know if I've just had a re-occuring coincidence... --Majicked 00:29, October 2, 2009 (UTC) Skillchain damage is determined by the closing weaponskill. In this case, Cannonball is the closing weaponskill and will determine Light's damage: 100% of closing weaponskill (see: Skillchain) since it's a 2-piece skillchain. -Thanacus
