I am correct in saying that you do not need to be Captain Rank to have him hold an extra tag for you. I have not yet completed the ToAU Missions and have not received the rank of Captain yet and am able to have a total of 5 tags per Assault runs if I am holding one and let him hold 4 for me.

Yes you are correct, just the same as u will NOT receive the extra assault tag if you are captain, but have not yet completed any Nyzul Isle.
