Added fame
By giving the boy his rod back you increase your fame and the local NPCs will say nice things about you for doing it.
Required for PLD AF weapon quest
In order to be able to activate the PLD AF weapons quest, Sharpening the Sword, you need to have give the boy back his fishing rod.
Changed next quest
It was misleading and seemed like you have to do this quest before being able to open up paladin --Tattersail 11:55, 11 November 2006 (EST)
Except that you can't do Sharpening the Sword without doing A Squire's Test, and consequently, the others. --Chrisjander 12:02, 11 November 2006 (EST)
