Talk:Galka
From FFXIclopedia, the free Final Fantasy XI encyclopedia
On the pie cart it says that 5.07% of Galka's are white mages to tell you the truth iv never seen a white mage Galka at a high lv is it just me. Has anyone else ever seen a high lv WHM / Galka???
I myself am a 75 Galka Whitemage on Ramuh server and I know at least 18 more. I am also a 75 Redmage, Blackmage, Summoner, Warrior, Monk, Corsair, and Samurai. White mage was my first job that I ever took up, even subless through the dunes. Galkas Rule ^^
I've been trying to find a link the the interview where SE talked about the mistranslation of the English guide, and confirmed that they were male. I would really help end an argument in my LS. Draze 02:07, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
I believe that everywhere i have read Galka are genderless. I believe if you look at your profile screen in game all races aside from Galka have a gender listed or at least they used to. Also in regards to Galka mages. I find Galka mages easier to play then say a TaruTaru tank. The low MP is much easier to make up for with good rings earrings and our RSE can basicly be used till 75 unlike a tank who would need higher defense. HP gear is hard to coem by at least in any reasonable quanitiy that doesnt take up a spot for other gear. Except maybe Lords Armor at 72. Zokudu 19:15, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
perspectives on Galka gender(lessness)
Debating the gender and sexuality of Galkas is a popular pastime in some arenas. The controversy stems from the NA game manual, which states Galkas are "genderless", and that they "reproduce by a form of reincarnation", but that they are treated in society as male (understandably, considering their appearance). There is also an obscure (but official) SE response to a question about in-game weddings, that reiterates that while Galkas "do not have gender", they may take the part of grooms, but not brides, in weddings. ( https://secure.playonline.com/polapps/s/s.kb.html.Qa?ZUID=3&polg_loc=en&id=2474&qs=id%3D0%26c1%3D0%26c2%3D0%26k%3Dwedding%26s%3D0%%2026o%3D0%26term%3D0%26caseNum%3D10%26polg_loc%3Den ) Likewise, in the Valenti(o)ne's Day events, Galkas are always paired with females of other races. Since Galkas have a de facto male "social gender", then, in what sense (if any) can they be said to be genderless?
Again turning to the Valenti(o)ne's Day events, it seems there are plenty of lonely female NPCs who dream of being matched up with a nice Galka boyfriend. This alone strongly suggests that they're not just "honorary males". There is also at least one Galka NPC (Laughing Lizard, near the Port Windy fishing guild) who mentions having a wife. There are a few other instances where the game itself suggests Galkas may experience gender-driven desire, and form reciprocal romantic attachments with females of other races; the one that most immediately springs to my mind is the story of Raogrimm and Cornelia (Mythril Musketeer) in the Magicite mission cutscenes.
In my opinion, these references within the game itself suggest a flawed NA manual translation, and the SE question/answer page linked above merely compounds the error. If there is any sense in which Galkas can be said to be "genderless", it's in the circular observation that since there are no female Galkas, it's superfluous to identify any Galka as male. My theory is that while Galkas don't reproduce sexually (there being no female Galkas), and evidently there is no interracial crossbreeding in Vana'diel, the bodies Galkas "wear" between reincarnation journeys are as anatomically suitable for romantic and marital relations as any other male player-characters' bodies. Until somebody with an original Japanese game manual and good bilingual skills sheds further light on the translation issue, that's the story I'm sticking with. --Vaprak 08:44, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Galka are male. It says on the Character Selection screen "Galka male" just as it does "Mithra female". Also, when you parry, block etc. in game the chat log says something along the lines of "XXX parries the ZZZ's attack with his weapon". I don't know if it actually says anywhere that there are no Galka females or whether this is presumed (I believe it's the latter). The word "reincarnation" tends to many people say that no other form of reproduction is possible, but perhaps it was an evolved trait due to something that happened in their past? Nothing but conjecture unless we hear some solid facts.
Just an FYI, during the Bastok mission line, you learn about how the galka were driven out of Altepa by the antica due to being outnumbered by the antican's superior reproductive ability, AKA the antica could reproduce, the galka couldn't. --Urth 19:12, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
There is (tangible) evidence that Galka do actually die, because the description SE gave of Sandworms mentions "interred bodies of the dead" in the "deserts of the Underworld" and the Sandworms as Galkan folklore. They may be talking about other races but, again, unless we hear some more info it's just guesswork.
In the June update which added new Wings of the Goddess mission, there was a new NPC introduced - Lilisette. Her father is Elvaan and her mother Hume, so cross-breeding does indeed exist in Vana'diel but I would wager that - even if they could reproduce in that fashion - Galka and other females wouldn't be able to bear offspring, as the Galka are so genetically different. Anyway... -- Aequis 22:47, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Galka is MALE and thats FINAL! UP.. DOWN.. UP.. DOWN.. SE should do the same as wat did to mithra when the found a "MALE" mithra, we want a nice lookin galkas femal. --Kongolo 12:57, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Gender and Sex are two completely different things. Gender is how one portrays them self in society, whether that be male or female, and Sex is basically what one actually is due to having certain sexual organs. So Galka in relation to Gender are male but in relation to Sex are neither. Due to this, it is possible that a Galka could be portrayed as a Female but it is extremely unlikely due to the physical appearance already associated with the Galka. -- Sheltered Merc
