Talk:How-To Guide: Red Mage

From FFXIclopedia, the free Final Fantasy XI encyclopedia

My seventh installment to my line of How-To guides. This one took a while to release because I was just really against patching up my good copy. I had actually both RDM and THF done, I just had to finish making them, and also post them on the site, but I finally got it done. This one took a while though. Everything was done completely by memory too (except the numbers on Clear Mind) so if you see any mistakes, just let me know. The Enfeebling Magic section took the longest time to write, but I noted on both the HTG: White Mage and HTG: Black Mage that I'd add a more in-depth section on my HTG: Red Mage.

(As a bit of a side-note, am I the only one who's getting driven up the wall by this Adventure Quest ad? I can't stand that guy in that dumb pose on top of that flaming demon thing. I've even tried the game, and it's really weird.)

Overall, good job! I just have a few comments.

Inaccurate:

- Chainspell lasts for 1 minute, not 30 seconds.
- "Unlike all the other enfeebles, though, there is no meritable Poison" is a untrue statement - many other enfeebles can't be merited (gravity, bind, etc.)
- Dispel can be resisted by normal mobs, namely ones that have a strong resistance to dark magic. Generally, the ones that are difficult to dispel can be magic finale'd.

Suggestions:

- Mention that when /blm, a good way to get hp after convert is to drain or elemental seal + drain.
- Solid wand/rose wand + 1 > af sword
- Bind: bind is often broken by damage. Physical or magical damage will break it. D.O.T.'s won't, but the initial damage from dia or bio can.
- There area few minor grammatical errors, but I didn't note them.

Thanks for the compliment! I try. I really appreciate that Chainspell fix, I would've looked pretty bad if a lot of other people read that, hehe. The 'enfeeble' thing was just another careless mistake. I meant all the enfeebles I previously mentioned, that is to say, all the 'normal' enfeebles. As for Dispel, it's never been resisted for me, even by normal monsters that are upwards of 10-20 levels higher than me.

I'll duly note the Solid/Rose Wands and Bind. As for the /BLM with "Drain" thing, that makes a lot of sense, but there's a couple of problems. One being that unless something bad happens, it's never a good idea to Convert in the middle of a fight, so Drain would be useless. Another is Drain doesn't always do a lot, even with E.S., so it's not always going to be worth it. Personally, I'd save E.S. for Sleep

Yeah, the dispel is very rarely resisted. I only encountered problems when I first moved to imps (I was a few levels lower than the rest of my party). After getting to an appropriate level for the mobs, it wasn't an issue again.

For me, I have found a lot of RDM have trouble Dispeling Soulflayers. They have an incredibly high resistance to magic and resist my Dispel even with capped Enfeebling with lots of magic accuracy equipment.Kyofooyo 21:17, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

/BLM drain is what I did, with regens for the next 10 minutes. I'd just be sure to cast stoneskin before I converted. It worked well for me, being an Elvaan with little mp to waste on healing myself. But I agree, it is risky. The only reason I felt safe doing it was because I staticed to 75 with my boyfriend who is an awesome paladin. I was spoiled and never had to worry about taking hits and felt safe in the red or yellow. Probably not a good call if you are with a tank you are unfamiliar with.

All in all great job! This will definitely give new RDM's a good place to start.

Aww, I really appreciate the compliment. And yeah, I find myself being a lot safer with Paladin tanks. lol, but occasionally, knowing them doesn't make me feel safer. I'll add that to Dispel and to Black Mage as an option. The only thing that sucks about these How-To Guides is that the only people who read guides are people who already know how to play and want to be better. This line of guides isn't really in-depth. I started writing my Beastmaster one, and noticed there were like ten other guides. Thankfully, I think only one of them was a guide for the job itself. Gotta finish Dark Knight now though. {See you again!}

Mind.

All-in-all, you've written a pretty solid guide.

I have one (very minor) idea for you to edit. Under the Job-Race Combinations > Elvaan, it says that Elvaan's naturally higher MND stat is helpful for making enfeebles land.

However, INT and MND do not help in causing an enfeeble to stick-- they increase the "power" of the enfeeble. That is to say, stacking MND gear when you cast Paralyze won't help Paralyze stick, but it will make the spell proc more. Similarly, MND gear with Slow notably increases the amount the target is Slowed down. The same goes for INT and INT-based enfeebles.

In short: Enfeebling skill is what we rely on to make a spell stick. INT and MND are used to increase duration and maximize the effect of the spell.

Sorry if I seem pedantic. You really have written a very good guide-- sometimes little things just get to me.

Kudos to you. Hope to see you cough up a few more guides like this!

Mind: Reply

I'll be perfectly honest, I've never been aware of that. Though it would make a lot more sense, so there's no way I'm going to challenge it at all. I'll change the Job-Race combinations right away. As for the "Hope to see you cough up a few more guides like this!" line, feel free to check out my How-To Guides for Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Paladin, Dancer, and Scholar. Dark Knight should be released today, seeing as I have a number of spares between classes and I've only to do the JA's, JT's, and spells now.

Race

So what i understood of the race is that humes are better for partys but elvaan for soloing is that right?? and also does that mean that in a one on one combat the elvaan would defeat the hume if they both were level 75 and subbed ninja?? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Finalxi88 (talkcontribs).
