Historical Background
In French folklore, the Tarasque was a dragon in the Aix La Chapelle region, specifically Nerluc in Provence. It had 4 or 6 legs, a lion's head (with the face of a lion or that of a bitter old man), horse's ears, bear's claws, and a long barbed tail. It has been depicted both with and without wings. It was covered in armored scales or a turtle shell, which it shed and regenerated every 7 years. It also breathed fire. It was considered the offspring of a Leviathan and a Bonnacon or a Leviathan and an Onachus, a giant serpent. It would ravage the countryside. Some accounts depicted Tarasque as a giant ox with bear's feet.
