Historical Background

A toreador is a matador (a bullfighter, easily identified by their elaborate outfits, red sheets of cloth, who fight, and eventually slay bulls). This explains why the cape is red and why it drops from a bull-like enemy (Buffalos are used as surrogates for Bulls in this game).
