Historical Background

A Trump (in card games) is a card which is elevated above its normal rank. Typically an entire suit is nominated as a trump suit - these cards then outrank all cards of plain (non-trump) suits. The word "trump" derives from "trionfo" or "triumph". Given the gambler-like nature of the Corsair job the name of their artifact weapon is most logical.
