Historical Background
In Japanese mythology, Tsuchigumo were spider-limbed monsters. Tsuchigumo were evidently based off of one of the groups of people inhabiting Japan. They lived in the mountains and were apparently called spiders due to some of their physical characteristics, leading them to eventually be depicted as spiders. In some tales, Tsuchigumo is a beautiful woman who leads an army of Yokai (spirits/demons) who weaves illusions all around her and who is eventually encountered by the hero in a mountain cave, where she transforms into a giant spider, who when cut open has thousands of smaller, but still giant, spiders crawling out of her. Tsuchigumo means "ground spider" (occasionally rendered as "earth spider"). Tsuchigumo is also the Japanese name for the Goliath Tarantula (Theraphosa leblondi), the largest spider in the world at present.
