Historical Background

Tyro is a female character in Greek mythology known largely for her role as mother to several Greek mythological characters. She was the daughter of Salmoneus and married Cretheus, but loved the river god Enipeus. In disguise, Poseidon fathered two children with Tyro; Pelias and Neleus. With Cretheus she had Aeson, Pheres, and Amythaon. In paticular her son Pelias is bound up with the stories of Jason and the quest for the Golden Fleece.
