Historical Background

All imbued cells used in Salvage are named after various cloud formations.

Undulatus means “waves” in Latin, but in this context it appears to refer to a wide variety of clouds.

Altostratus undulatus

Altostratus undulatus is a type of high altitude stratus cloud that appears like a diffuse white or gray blanket cloud with distinct waves running across its lower surface (an undulated base). The waves run parallel. These clouds tend to be found between 6500- 16,500 feet. Its appearance is the result of wind shear on stratus clouds. These clouds are not indicators of any noteworthy weather. Alto is Latin for “high” and stratus means “layer”. For an image of these clouds, follow this link [1]

Altocumulus undulatus

Altocumulus undulatus is a type of cumulus cloud at high altitudes that appears like a white or gray blanket cloud with a rippled pattern with small openings in it. These clouds tend to be found between 8000- 20,000 feet. Its appearance is the result of wind shear on cumulus clouds. These clouds are indicators of drizzle or possibly of an approaching front. Alto is Latin for “high” and cumulus means “heap”. For an image of these clouds, follow this link [2]

Stratus undulatus

Stratus undulatus is a type of stratus cloud that has a rippled pattern with small openings in it. These clouds tend to form at 6000 feet or under. Its appearance is the result of wind shear.

Stratocumulus undulatus

Stratocumulus undulatus is a type of stratocumulus cloud (low, unevenly shaped clouds) that has a rippled pattern with small openings in it. Its appearance is the result of wind shear.
