Origin of the name

The first time I started Final Fantasy XI and was faced with choosing a name, I got stuck, much like I did in earlier Final Fantasy games when given this option. This was going to require some thought ... this was a very important decision ... one which would, hopefully, remain with me for a very long time. I toyed around with various names that I thought sounded fantastical, however none seemed to really have that ring to it--or they were already taken--so I turned my attention toward Greek Mythology. I've always been a big fan of Greek Mythology and I immediately thought of Dionysus, the Greek God of Wine and the Inspirer of Ritual Madness and Ecstasy. Instead of using the entire name, however, I shortened it to what I currently go by in the World of Vana'diel ... Dionys.

While Dionysus, in Greek Mythology, is pronounced as (Die-oh-ny-sus) I pronounce my name as (Dee-oh-niece), an additional twist on the name.

I always smile when someone in a party--or in passing--calls me "the God of Wine," as it's fun to see how many people actually understand the origin of the name.
